Statements from Dee Gordon & Marlins Regarding 80 Game Suspension

Dee Gordon Statement

MLB tweeted out news of the immediate suspension of Dee Gordon at around 1am eastern time last night. News came so late because MLB says that’s when Gordon decided to drop his appeal, after new evidence came out.

Gordon will lose about $1.5 million of the $3 million he was due this year, but he just signed a 5 year $50 million guaranteed contract with the Marlins in the offseason. Funny thing about the contract is how weighted it is toward the back end years.

The Miami Marlins and Dee Gordon both released statements today regarding the news that Gordon had failed a PED test earlier in the year.Seed Sack

Thought I did not do so knowingly, I have been informed that test results showed I ingested something that contained prohibited substances. The hardest part about this is feeling that I have let down my teammates, the organization, and the fans. I have been careful to avoid products that could contain something banned by MLN and the 20+ tests that I have taken and passed throughout my career prove this. I made a mistake and I accept the consequences. –

Marlins president David P. Samson had this to say.

It was announced… that Major League Baseball has suspended Dee Gordon for 80 games. Dee Gordon is a very important part of our team, and we all love him and support him. That said, I do not like or condone what he did. He is an important member of this organization and will be for many years to come. It is a huge, huge disappointment to the kids, to our fans, to his teammates, and to everyone in our organization who works hard every single day to put a product on the field, and off the field, that all Miamians can be proud of. He will be back 80 games from now, and he will be welcomed back to this organization, but in the interim period, we expect him – and we are positive – that he will do whatever is necessary to make it up to our fans, to his teammates, and to his organization.

The Marlins completely support the Major League Baseball Drug Prevention Program in every way. That said, it is a huge disappointment and a huge loss for our team. And as I said, we love Dee Gordon, but we do not like what he did.
