With the seventh pick in the 2015 MLB draft, the Boston Red Sox selected Andrew Benintendi, an outfielder from the University of Arkansas.
Benintendi had a spectacular year with Arkansas in 2015, playing in 65 games with a .376 batting average. The 21 year-old also had 85 hits, 20 homers, 57 RBI’s, and an OBP of .488. He also went on to receive the 2015 Golden Spikes Award presented by USA Baseball, one of the most prestigious awards in college baseball.
Let’s take a look at some highlights from this future star.
If you couldn’t already tell from the video, Andrew Benintendi is a phenomenal baseball player. If he can play like this at the professional level, forget about it. He’ll be right up there with Trout and Harper. He’s very athletic, has great speed, can play unreal defense in the outfield, and has an unbelievable swing that can do all kinds of damage.
Benintendi started the 2016 season with single-A affiliate of Boston, the Salem Red Sox. He was off to a great start, playing in 34 games with a .341 batting average, 46 hits, one homer, 32 RBI’s, and an OBP of .413. While showing great promise to Boston, Benintendi had recently been called up to Portland, Boston’s double-A affiliate. He has only played 4 games in AA so far, and has not been so hot. He has 2 hits in 15 AB’s, 2 RBI’s, and a batting average of .133. I know, not the start you would be hoping for from this young prospect. But hey, it’s only been 4 games. He played 34 games of unreal baseball earlier in the season, and he’s definitely under some pressure with the expectations as high as they are for him. I’m sure he’ll do just fine, and eventually work his way up to the bigs.
There is a question that many people are probably wondering; When will Andrew Benintendi make his major league debut? Well, it all depends. If he does fantastic in AA for Portland, he will eventually get called up to AAA Pawtucket. It’s only going to get harder for him there. If he tears it up in AAA, and looks promising enough to play in the bigs, then I would say Benintendi could be looking at a debut by the end of the 2016 season.
As a Sox fan, I’m wicked excited to see what this kid has in store for Boston. If he can live up to the hype, and prove to be a future star, the Boston Red Sox could have a really, REALLY bright future.
