Yes, you read that right.
THE Barry Zito, the 2002 Cy Young Award winner and owner of one of the loopiest, filthiest hooks in the history of baseball is back on the A’s big league club. 37 year old Zito was recalled from Triple-A Nashville on Wednesday. He hasn’t thrown a big league game since 2013 with the Giants, and didn’t throw a pitch for any affiliated ball club all of 2014. I guess the home life wasn’t all it was cracked up to be, because this season Zito tried out in hopes of making the big league A’s club out of spring training.
A’s have already noted that Zito will not make any starts for the club, and will pitch exclusively out of the bullpen.
What an awesome homecoming moment for the very wealthy veteran, who rode out his final years of his 7 year $126 million contract with the Giants. Oakland A’s fans are having flashbacks of Zito’s last days with the organization, the Game 1 of the 2006 American League Championship Series.
Is this a ploy to sell a couple more tickets for the end of the 2015 season? Or maybe just a nice gesture to the veteran who’s got to be thinking about hanging ’em up soon? Either way we can agree it’s awesome. I’ll tune in.
