Jose Fernandez Drills Umpire Kerwin Danley with 98 mph

Marlins’ phenom Jose Fernandez’s debut was an interesting one. The young stud who’s never lost at home racked up the usual 13 Ks against the Tigers. But this time, those 13 Ks only came in 5 innings along with as many earned runs. He took his first L at home in his career, quite the streak.

His pitching numbers aren’t what umpire Kerwin Danley will remember about his first outing of the 2016 season, however. Jose Fernandez missed his spot by a quarter mile, and catcher Realmuto couldn’t even get a glove on it. Home plate umpire Kerwin Danley took this heater that registered at 98 mph square off the dome. Props to him for not even a flinch. Although I’m not sure how after this you can stand in and stare down a fastball again. Damn it, Realmuto, get a glove on it or something.
