Ryan Howard isn’t happy about the way he’s been treated in Philadelphia lately.
ESPN – After a pinch hit appearance late in Saturday’s game in Philadelphia, Phillies long time 4 hole hitter Ryan Howard had a beer bottle thrown at him from the stands. Howard, who hadn’t been in the lineup in 5 games, entered the game in the 9th to pinch hit, which ended in a ground ball to the pitcher. When he walked back to the dugout, he saw a beer bottle coming from the stands land right at his feet.
Here’s what Ryan Howard had to say about the incident that the Phillies say they’re investigating.
“I’ve done too much in this town to have that kind of stuff…If you want to yell out ‘You suck,’ that’s whatever. But when you start throwing stuff, that’s when stuff gets personal.”
“I don’t play that. To me, that’s crossing the line. It becomes a security issue. It’s not necessary. That stuff infuriates me…”
“Somebody has to do something. Somebody should get reprimanded for it. Because if I would’ve done something, if I would’ve went into the stands and tried to beat this dude up, I would’ve gotten in trouble by Major League Baseball. He probably would’ve tried to sue me. But it’s OK for him to throw a bottle and then go home and be on his merry way? Nah, that doesn’t work…”
Ryan Howard hasn’t exactly been the guy Phillies fans have known for the last decade, but fans crossing the line in this manner is always unacceptable. If anyone should be throwing bottles at Ryan Howard, it should be the owners paying him $25 million in the last year of his massive contract. But shortly after he decides to retire, Phillies fans will hopefully remember the legacy of the 365 HRs and 1,154 RBIs he had in a Philly uniform.
