Yesterday was David Ortiz’s last home opener at Fenway. The famed Red Sox hitter, better known as “Big Papi” announced his retirement after this season, and a crowd of nearly 40,000 sat in Fenway Park to watch his “last first game”. With hands over hearts, the fans and David Ortiz were surprised to see a young singer walk onto the field. Alex Ortiz, age 15, sang a rendition of the national anthem in front of not only thousands of eyes, but her father. Papi was shown covering his face with his hat at times throughout the song, clearly overwhelmed with great emotion.
“It was a surprise, a beautiful surprise. At some point, you start thinking about your kids and the way you raised your kids and everything you’ve been through,” Ortiz said. “I got caught into those memories, and it was beautiful.”
After the performance, her father rushed over to give her a hug and a message: “Don’t ever surprise me like that again.”
Ortiz went 2 for 5 with an RBI in the game versus the Orioles, and even though the Sox lost 9-7, the night was full of unforgettable memories for Big Papi.
