As an avid watcher of baseball, I see many reasons as to why replay has been instituted in todays game. Replay never lies and it will never be wrong (although the people watching them can be), but isn’t that what made the game great? A Wally Bachman-esque freakout at the ball park to get the fans all fired up? Unlike the other sports of today, baseball hadn’t changed much in our lifetime. It was pure, a game won and lost on human error. Why take that out of the game? Should baseball get rid of replay?
We were the lefties of the sports world, not caving to what everyone else wanted.
But we are slowly losing what made baseball great. Now I agree that the right call should be made, I just think that the guys on the field who get paid to umpire the game should do it. Lets get rid of replay, insert more Jose Bautista bat flips, and more post season brawling. Lets get away from trying to change the game in new ways and just try to amplify what brought people to the stands in the first place. Every fan wants to see something they’ve never seen before and I think that applies to everyone. Where is the fun in seeing an instant replay 500 times? People want a play that they’ll talk about for years to come. Galarraga, a few years ago, lost his Perfect Game. Back then it was just an unfortunate part of the game, but ask the people that were at that game and the people watching from home. If they had replay, no one would still be talking about it. But because of the outcome, it will forever be engrained in the brains of every fan out there. It’s the “what if factor” that keeps us watching. The “this might be the game that I see the craziest thing that has ever happened in sports.” It drives me to Fenway Park every chance I get, its what makes five year old kids beg their dad to get tickets to their favorite sports team. It lingers in all of us and that may never happen again if replay is always there to tear it down.
